Tokyo Treat has a sister company called Sakuraco, which focuses on more traditional Japanese snacks and treats. Check out our Sakuraco review for more information.

What is Tokyo Treat?

Tokyo Treat is one of the most popular Japanese snack subscription boxes out there. Every month, they send a themed box filled with 15–20 snacks to their subscribers across the globe.

All snacks are hand-selected and represent the modern and trendy side of Japan. The variety and quality of treats are what really sets this box apart. It’s not just one KitKat, it’s a pack of KitKats. It’s not just random items thrown together in a box, it’s all in line with the theme of the box.

The booklet that comes with every box again shows how much effort is put in. It includes information about every item in the box, along with additional facts about Japan and its culture.

In my Valentine’s box, for example, there were three full pages about Valentine’s Day traditions in Japan. Some extra information about Strawberry Season and the “Love Umbrella” symbol was found in the middle of the booklet. In the end, there were some “Valentine’s” activities to do in Tokyo and information about festivals in February.

If you’re interested in Japanese culture (which I assume you are when subscribing to a box like this), it’s great to learn more about it through this booklet.

How much does Tokyo Treat cost?

Since Tokyo Treat is a subscription, you can save money by subscribing for a longer time.

  • 1 month: $37.50/month
  • 3 months: $35.50/month
  • 6 months: $33.50/month
  • 12 months: $32.50/month.

Keep in mind that you’ll have to pay for shipping on top of the price of the box subscription.

How much does shipping cost?

Sadly, shipping isn’t included with the subscription price. Per box, you’ll have to pay an additional $10.50 or $12.50, depending on where in the world you’re located. If you have a yearly subscription, this can really add up.

I understand that these boxes aren’t exactly cheap to send – they include heavy snacks and even a drink, which is what makes the box so much fun to open. But having such a big cost on top of the price of the subscription can be quite a shocker, so make sure to do the calculations before you subscribe.

That being said, even with the additional shipping price, Tokyo Treat isn’t more expensive than other Japanese snack boxes of the same quality. Bokksu, for example, offers free shipping but the boxes are way more expensive. And while Japan Candy Box offers free shipping and has a cheaper box, there are only 10 items in the box.

So you do get the value for money, even when including shipping in the final price.

How long does Tokyo Treat take to deliver?

The official website states that the boxes are prepped and shipped within 3–5 business days. The total time it takes for your box to arrive depends on where you’re located, as different shipping methods are used:

  • DHL shipping : 3–5 days
  • Express Shipping: 5–10 days
  • JapanPost Priority Shipping: 14–28 days
  • Surface Mail: 60–90 days.

I’m based in the UK and my box was delivered through DHL. I ordered it on February 1st and it arrived at my apartment on February 7th. I was happily surprised it got here in less than a week!

What’s included in the Tokyo Treat box?

Every box from Tokyo Treat has a theme – this could be related to the time of year, like cherry blossom season, Halloween, or summer. Or, it could focus on a part of Japanese culture, like bento or anime.

You can expect to find 15–20 full-sized Japanese snacks from the following categories:

  • Exclusive Japanese drinks
  • Rare Japanese KitKat flavours
  • Crazy Japanese candy
  • Japanese instant ramen
  • Crunchy chips and salty snacks
  • Cakes, cookies and breads.

My Tokyo Treat box review

My Tokyo Treat box arrived in February, fully themed for Valentine’s Day.

In the February box, I received the following items:

  • KitKat Lucky Daifuku
  • Suppamucho Sour Plum Chips
  • Pure Petit Grape Gummy
  • Maruka-chan Arare
  • Qoo Peach Jelly Drink
  • Strawberry Ginza Rusk
  • Mini Strawberry Thunder
  • Mini Asparagus Biscuit
  • Shrimp Senbei
  • Kinako Stick
  • Choco Cake
  • Love Umbrella Chocolate
  • Pakila Chocolate Wafers
  • Spicy Peanut Arare
  • Karai Spicy Ramen

Overall, I was very impressed at the amount (and size!) of the items in the box. I loved that they all matched the Valentine’s Day and Strawberry Season theme so nicely. It was super fun to try some new treats as I hadn’t tasted many of them before.

It really feels like Tokyo Treat doesn’t skimp on things. Instead of adding a single KitKat, we got a full bag of them. That’s the value for money you’d like to see when ordering a box like this. Plus, I loved that there was so much to try – not just chocolate, but also some other types of treats.

If you’d like to get a better idea of what you can expect in your Tokyo Treat box, take a look at their past boxes.

Should I get the Tokyo Treat or Sakuraco box?

Both Tokyo Treat and Sakuraco are quality Japanese snack subscription boxes. Sakuraco is actually a sister brand of Tokyo Treat, so you can expect the same quality when ordering with them.

There are, however, some main differences. Tokyo Treats has a big focus on modern and trendy Japanese snacks. These are snacks you can find in Japanese supermarkets, some coming in anime packaging.

Sakuraco, on the other hand, includes more authentic and traditional Japanese snacks – even including some Japanese tea for you to recreate your own tea ceremony at home. You can read my full Sakuraco review and unboxing for some information on this box.

Both boxes are themed and include treats that are hand-picked. Since the company is located in Japan, they work with local sellers, making sure they only send the best to their customers. I loved both boxes – you can’t really go wrong with either of them.
